Christian Themes in Classic Shows Part 5

Okay, I said last time I would start off with Family Matters so here I go. I will also review Webster and My Sister Sam from CBS.

Okay, Family Matters was a spin-off of Perfect Strangers. The mom worked at the same newspaper as the cousins and her husband was a Chicago Policeman and he guest starred one time thus setting up the show which centered around their family. They had three kids (although the youngest disappeared and was forgotten). They had a next door neighbor that liked the middle daughter although she did not returned the feelings. The first Christian reference concerns him. The family had a bowling competition and they got real competitive to the point that the power goes out and they don't know if the dad got his final strike or not. His mom who was living with them at the time informed them that it was the Good Lord teaching them a lesson.

The next reference also involves the next  door neighbor whose name is Steve. They are all rushing to get ready for Church when he shows up. He wants to go with them and they very willingly agree (because it was Church after all and they didn't want to turn away a potential believer). And during the service he asks Jesus into his heart and then wants to join the choir but he can't sing and that causes a fight between everyone.

A third reference that I can recall involves the Winslows (their last name) counseling an engage couple. They are fighting which leads the new couple to consider not getting married and this leads the Winslows to encourage them to get married because after every fight is the making up. And that is it for Family Matters.

Webster was about a little black boy being raised by a white couple. He calls them "Mam" and "George". "George" was his dad's teammate in the NFL and he promised to look after the boy if something happened to him and his wife. And that is what happens. The only Christian reference was when they go to church with the boy's uncle and the preacher makes reference the God calling the boys parents home. He doesn't understand what this really means and thus blames God for his parents' death. There may have been more but I don't remember them.

The last show for this week's entry will be My Sister Sam which aired on CBS. I don't know of any references and I don't remember much about the show but it is still a family sitcom in my book so that is why it gets a mention. Next week on a special night I will be doing an entry on the 20th anniversary of Power Rangers. Also please keep an eye out for my story in which Chapter 7 concludes tomorrow and Chapter 8 starts on Monday. This series will return the first Thursday in September.
