From the
Prologue:
“I guess I’ll begin with what happen
exactly one year ago today,” she continues to write, “It is a day that changed
my life forever and I didn’t even know it yet and honestly it will be months
before I will know about it. So what did happen that day? Well I gave blood to
the local blood bank. And I did this against the wishes of my parents…err…I
mean grandparents and that blood was then used to save the lives of many people
including my fellow students. But I will get to that in a bit. So you want me to start from the beginning
huh? Okay, but even you a simple blank page in a book full of entries may not
like me when I am done. It actually didn’t start exactly a year ago today. I
know I don’t have to actually tell you this but it is to help me keep the facts
straight in my head. The date was Monday, April 2, 2012; I was an 8th
grader and not a very popular one. An announcement came on the intercom and…”
Chapter One
Monday, April 2,
2012, 8:50 A.M. …
“Attention students,” said a female
voice, “The local blood-collecting agency will be in the gym on Friday during
lunchtime. If you are interested in donating please come by the office and sign
up and then pick up a form for your parents to sign giving you permission, thank-you.”
The bell rings ending 1st
period. A young girl tries to gather her books in a hurry to head for her next
class but being that she is new she was knocked around by the other students
with some doing it intentionally. Finally, by 8:55 she had everything together
and began heading out the door. She stops by her locker which was directly
across from the office. She sees the signup sheet and immediately turns away.
“No,”
she thought to herself, “my parents said
never to give my blood to anyone.”
She finishes up at her locker and
heads for her next class arriving just in time.
At her locker, the same girl once
again sees the signup sheet to donate blood.
“Man,”
she thinks, “why do they not want me to
donate anyway? What harm could there be in donating a little blood?”
She leans
against her locker and just stares at the signup sheet. Another girl walks by
and sees her staring at the sheet.
“Can’t decide if you want to donate
huh?” asked the student.
“No,” said the girl, “I can’t decide
whether or not to go against the wishes of my parents. They will tell me no
without a second thought. There’s no doubt about that.”
“Then it wouldn’t hurt to sign up
and take home the permission slip,” said the other student. You won’t have to
turn in the slip until you show up to donate.”
“And if I don’t get it signed?”
asked the girl.
“Don’t show up and they’ll just
scratch your name off the list,” said the other student.
The girl walks over to the bulletin
board and signs her name to the list. She then picks up a permission slip and
puts it in her bag.
“There it doesn’t ever hurt to ask,
right?” asked the girl.
The other student reads the girl’s
name on the list and says, “No, Michelle Van Helsing, it doesn’t. By the way
are you in any way related to the famous Van Helsing?”
“Uh,” said Michelle, “I don’t know.
I always thought he was fiction.”
“He was a very prominent fighter of
evil in the mid-15th century,” said the other girl.
“Really?” said Michelle, “Maybe I
am. I don’t know but I’ll make sure to ask my parents, tonight.”
“And you will let me know what you
find out tomorrow?” asked the student.
“I sure will,” said Michelle, “by
the way what’s your name?”
“My name?” asked the student, “It’s
Victoria.”
“It’s nice to meet you Victoria,”
said Michelle offering to shake her hand.
Reluctantly, Victoria shakes it.
Michelle heads toward the cafeteria to eat lunch. Victoria stares her down as
she watches.
“For now Miss Van Helsing,” she says
under her breath, “I’ll shake your hand and be your friend. But when the time
comes, I will eliminate you and stake my claim over your territory in this fair
city and soon my plans of becoming the only Vampire Queen in the world will
come to pass.”
Her eyes turn dark as she slowly
fades away giving out a very evil laugh.
It is last period, and Michelle is
in study hall trying to concentrate on homework that will allow her to have a
head start on it before heading home. But she can’t stop thinking about what
Victoria told her about Van Helsing.
“Is
he for real?” she asked herself, “and
could I be related to him?”
By the time she finish completed
this thought the final bell rings.
“Time
to go home now,” she said.
