30 minutes
later; the blood-donating clinic…
Judy walks in and finds the mother
flopped over her daughter crying.
“Mam?” asked a concerned Judy,
“What’s wrong?”
“It’s about time you got back,” said
the mother, “My daughter is slowly dying of dehydration because she doesn’t
have the strength to return to the water.”
“Well I’m here now with some blood
that will heal her instantly,” said Judy.
“Oh she doesn’t need the blood for
healing purposes,” said the mother, “The water will do that part. She just
needs the blood to restore her strength.”
“And I promise you this blood will
do just that,” promised Judy.
“Do you really think you are fooling
me,” said the mother, “I know what you are and I know you know what we are and
do you really think I will allow you to give my daughter that bag of blood?”
“Oh yes,” said Judy looking directly
into the woman’s eyes, “You will allow me to give your daughter this blood.”
“Do you really think compulsion will
work on me?” asked the mother.
“I don’t know what you are talking
about,” said Judy.
“Uh I think you do,” said the
mother, “You just tried it on me. In case you didn’t know, my people are
completely immune to vampire compulsion because our world is 100% vervain which
allows us to breath underwater.”
“Do you want your daughter to die?”
asked Judy.
“No,” said the mother, “Which is why
you will have no choice but to give my daughter some of my blood.”
“I’ve told you already,” said Judy,
“The process to get your blood ready for transfusion will take a while.”
“How long?” asked the mother.
“About an hour,” said Judy, “Now
your daughter will die if I don’t give her some blood right now, so what will
it be?”
“I much rather her die than become
one of you and be cursed to never return to Atlantis,” said the mother.
“What if I told you,” said Judy,
“there is a way for her to return even with vampire blood in her.”
“It isn’t,” insisted the mother, “A
mermaid’s physiology is so vampire blood will not allow him or her to breathe
underwater as long as it is in the body.
The body won’t even transform.”
“Mam,” said Judy, “allow this blood
be put into your daughter’s body and I will guarantee that she will always be
allowed to return to Atlantis.”
“How can you possibly be able to
guarantee something that is literally impossible?” asked the mother.
“Well since this is what I am trying
to convince you to allow,” said Judy, “I’ll go ahead and tell you. My queen has
in her procession a magical source that can make such a thing happen.”
“A magical source,” said the mother,
“really? And what is this magical source.”
“Enough of this,” said an Aid who
was nearby and listening to the conversation.
She bites her wrist causing it to
bleed and then brings it up to the mother’s mouth forcing her to drink.
“Oh no,” said the mother, “What just
happen here?”
“You just drank vampire blood making
it impossible for you to return to Atlantis,” said the Aid, “Now if you don’t
want me to kill you and force your transformation to begin you will do as Judy
says.”
“No,” said the mother, “Don’t force
me to do this.”
“What’s it going to be?” asked Judy,
“Her or you?”
“You don’t understand,” said the
mother, “She’s the heir to the throne. If she can’t return then she won’t be
able to give Atlantis the kind of leader they need and chaos will break out
between those who want contact with the human world and those who don’t. She is
the only one who can set which policy all the people of Atlantis will agree to
follow.”
“Well then,” said Judy, “allow me to
give her this blood and chaos will not come about. I can guarantee she can
return to rule the kingdom.”
“But if she returns to Atlantis,”
said the mother, “Vampires will then be allowed to enter as they please putting
the entire kingdom at their mercy.”
“Well you could die and become one
yourself and then you won’t be able to stop us from turning your daughter,”
said Judy.
“I don’t understand,” said the
mother.
“Well,” said Judy, “Once turned you
will be taken to our queen to join her clan. Refusal is no option because the
turn occurred on her property and it result in a stake in the heart.”
“I uh,” said the mother, “Oh me, the
council is not going to like this and neither is my husband, the King of
Atlantis but go ahead and give her the blood. But can she receive this help
from this special magical source without becoming a vampire?”
“I don’t see why she can’t but it
will be up to the queen,” said Judy, “I am sorry.”
“I understand,” said the mother,
“And what about me? I can’t return to Atlantis as long as I have vampire blood
in me. How long will it last?”
“Queen’s blood is forever,” said
Judy, “but rogue blood is only for 24 hrs. And Casey here is a rogue.”
“But aren’t rogues not tied to any
queen?” asked the mother as she watches the blood enter her daughter’s veins.
“True,” said Judy, “but Casey isn’t
a rogue vampire. She just has rogue blood. She
was turned by a vampire that was turned by a queen meaning anyone who is
turned by her is a rogue.”
“Like what can happen to me if I
were to die,” said the mother.
“Which will not happen,” said Judy,
“the one thing my queen does not like is rogue vampires. Because they cannot be
trusted to recommit their loyalty to her after a year is over.”
“I see,” said the mother, “which
brings me back to my question what should I do until I can return to Atlantis?”
“We will put you in a cell,” said Judy,
“In there you will be able to sleep in a comfortable bed, have access to all
the necessities of a normal human.”
“But I’m not a normal human,” said
the mother.
“You are until the vampire blood is
gone from your system,” said Judy, “Actually you are what is called a
‘potential turned’ but that’s a mute point.”
“If you say so,” said the mother,
“but I won’t be able to go to this cell until I know my daughter is alright. Is
that okay?”
“That will be quite alright,” said
Judy.
“Good,” said the mother.
When the blood bag was empty, the
woman’s daughter began to awake.
“Mom?” she asked, “what’s going on?
I feel strange inside like I never felt before?”
“It will be okay sweetheart,” said
her mother, “These nice ladies gave you some blood so you can live and return
home.”
“Blood?” asked the daughter, “but it
wasn’t vampire blood was it?”
No answer.
“Mom,” said the daughter, “was it
vampire blood? I have to know. The fate of my kingdom rests on this answer.
“Yes,” said the mother, “it was vampire
blood.”
“But I can’t return to Atlantis for
at least 24 hrs. with vampire blood in me,” said the daughter.
She begins to cry.
“Why mom?” she asked, “Why did you
allow them to do this to me?”
“Because I had no choice,” said her
mom, “they force fed me vampire blood too and threaten to turn me if I didn’t
allow them to save your life this way.”
“But mom,” said the daughter, “I’m
the Princess of Atlantis. Tomorrow is my coronation ceremony. Tomorrow is when
I officially receive my crown and begin to learn how to run the kingdom for the
day I am to become queen. Do you know what you have done to me? You have just
put the entire kingdom in chaos. I promise you mother when we return to
Atlantis, I will tell my father of your betrayal and you will die for this! Do
you hear me? You will die! Traitor!”
“Perhaps,” said Judy, “she needs a
place to rest until her 24 hrs are up as well. Casey, will you please escort
her to a cell down in the cave’s dungeons?”
“Yes, mam,” said Casey.
