From Chapter Three:

“Are you ready to go?” asked David.

“I sure am,” said Michelle trying to sound like she is in a good mood although that voice in her head was bothering her.”

“Are you sure you are okay?” asked David.

“Yes, I am fine,” insists Michelle.

“Okay,” said David, “Let’s go home.”

They exit the community center and get into David’s truck and head home.

Chapter Four

11:00 P.M.; the night before…

A young woman was walking home after being released from the clinic. Both the clinic and the group gathering meeting were close to where she lived. There was a mysterious stranger following her. He started when she left her apartment to go to the meeting and continued once she left the clinic. At first he kept his distance of about 10 yards but got closer and closer to her as they walked.

“Katherine,” he said when he got to a distance of only a few feet.

When she heard her name she stopped and froze.

“Who are you and what do you want?” she asked.

“I just want to talk,” he said.

She turns around to look at the guy and when she sees him she instantly recognizes him.

“I’m sorry,” she said, “but I don’t want to have anything to do with you.”

She takes off running. He pursues her. She in attempt to escape him runs down a dark alley and hides behind some garbage cans. He follows her.

“Katherine,” he said, “I promise not to harm you. I just want to talk. Please come and face me.”

“Leave me alone,” she called out, “I don’t have anything to do with you are your family, Kevin.”

“Listen,” said Kevin, “I don’t want to anything to do with my family either. I don’t like the kind of business they are in and that is why I went to college to avoid going into that kind of business.”

“How do I know you are telling me the truth?” asked Katherine.

“You don’t,” said Kevin, “but to prove to you I will not harm you. I am putting my gun on the ground and taking five steps away. Come out and pick it up and point it to me. Then you can use it to force my family to leave you and your family alone or you will shoot me.”

            “I don’t believe you,” said Katherine, “It’s a trap.”

“Okay,” said Kevin, “then let’s fake both of our deaths and run off together.”

“And how do you plan on doing that?” asked Katherine as she comes out from her hiding place.

“Just come with me and you will see,” said Kevin.

Katherine walks over to Kevin who immediately grabs her and puts a cloth over her mouth and nose. She passes out into his arms. He pulls out his phone and instructs someone to bring a car around. When it arrives he puts her in and then goes and picks up the gun and puts it away. He then climbs into the car and takes out his cell phone.

“Mom,” he says, “I’ve got her. It took a while but I got her to trust me long enough so I could knock her out. I’m on my way home right now.”

Nearby in the woods…

Another young woman was running for life. She was being pursued by members of a gang in her neighborhood that has been after her to join for years. She turned into the woods in hopes of losing her. But they kept their pursuit of her.

“I’m not interested in joining your gang,” she yelled, “So leave me alone.”

“You will join,” said one of the boys chasing her, “because you have no idea what you have gotten into going into these woods.”

The girl ignores the boy and takes off running at her top speed. She sees what looks like a clearing in front of her so she makes for it but before she gets there she trips over a root and lands flat on her face.

“Ah,” said a voice, “What do we have here?”

“Looks like a volunteer to me,” said another voice.

The girl who was dazed for a bit looks up to the source of the two voices and sees two teenage girls a little older than her dressed in black robes. The boys who were pursuing her stopped at the edge of the clearing and watched as the girl is helped up.

“Well,” said one of the boys, “I warned her not to go into this clearing.”

“What’s going on?” asked the girl.

“First, please,” said one of the robed teenagers, “what is your name?”

            “Uh Julie,” she answered.

“Well Julie,” said one of the robed girls, “you have been chosen for something extremely important.”
“Chosen?” asked Julie, “chosen for what?”

“You have been chosen to assist us in obtaining great power,” said another robed teenager.

“How do you want me to do that?” asked Julie.

“By agreeing to be sacrificed on our altar of power,” said a third robed teenager.

“Sacrificed?” asked Julie, “as in die?”

“Yeah,” said the first robed teenager, “but it will be for a good cause.”

“And what good cause is that?” asked Julie.

“Well by being sacrificed you will be granting us great power,” said the robed teenager, “enough great power that hopefully we can stop the vicious attacks being made on our coven.”

            “Attacks?” asked Julie, “by whom?”

“Warlocks,” said the second robed teenager, “they have been ‘geniefying’ our members lately and now we are down to only three members.”

“Ever thought about recruiting new members?” asked Julie.

“We can’t,” said the third member, “In order to become a witch you have to be a former fairy.”

“Oh,” said Julie, “I see. And killing random girls who wonders into this clearing is the only option you have left to grant yourselves more power.”

“Exactly,” said the first robed teen, “Will you to do this?”

“How exactly does this work?” asked Julie, “I assume burning me alive is part of the ritual.”

“Not exactly,” said the second robed teen, “Yes, you will be burned but you won’t be alive when it happens and it won’t happen for another 24 hours. First, we will draw the pentagram on your chest. The pentagram is a symbol meant to capture great power. In this case the power in your soul. Once drawn, it then will be carved with this special ceremonial knife. The blood that flows down your body will touch special ointment that shoot up a beam that will make your body glow. Once this happens, I will take this same knife and lunged down into your heart. This is what will kill you but your soul will not exit the body. Instead, your soul will go through a process that will transform it into energy. And it takes 24 hours for the soul to be completely transformed into energy. When those 24 hours is up, we will return and burn your body thus releasing the energy into us.”

“Wow,” said Julie, “So what you are saying is I will be helping you stop these warlocks form turning you into genies?”

“Yeah,” said the third robed teen, “that is pretty much it. Are you interested?”

“Well right now,” said Julie, “It is either this or them.”

She refers to the boys at the entrance to the clearing she came to.

“Okay,” she said, “yes, I’ll do this. But will I suffer any pain from this.”

“The carving will sting,” said the second robed teen, “but once you feel the beam surround the body, you will be overcome with a feeling of calmness and the pain will just go away.”

“And will I feel pain when the knife hits my heart?” asked Julie.

“No,” said the first robed teen, “by this point you will be so calmed and relax and in a sort of a trance that you want even be aware what is happening to you.”

“I understand,” said Julie, “Let’s do this.”

“Are you sure?” asked one of the girls, “This will be final. There will be no coming back as a human ever. Your soul will be magical energy residing in us forever. Do you understand this?”

            “I do,” said Julie.

“Very well,” said the first robed teen, “Mindy, please take Julie to be properly dressed for this ceremony.”

“Of course,” said Mindy, “Julie, if you will please follow me.”

Mindy walks toward another entrance to the clearing with Julie following right behind her. When they pass through the entrance, Julie found herself in a house.

“Wait how did that happen?” she asked.

“Simple,” said Mindy, “It’s a special magical portal that gives us quick access to the clearing. It helps us get there without having to leave this house. It’s actually the only way we can leave the house without being pursued by those warlocks. It’s also the only way we can access the clearing which we need to continue our meetings as a coven.”

“And why can’t the warlocks that are after you just pass through it themselves?” asked Julie.

“Because only witches and those with them can pass through the portal,” said Mindy, “Like you for example.”

“And the clearing where we were just at,” said Julie, “Can’t they access it the same way I did?”

“No,” said Mindy, “that particular access is an open channel to anyone not connected to the supernatural.”

“Like me,” said Julie, “In other words it’s a way to trick people like me to become your sacrifice to gain more power. Is that right?”

            “Well…” hesitated Mindy.

“The first thing I heard after I tripped over that root was that I volunteered for something which apparently is exactly what I did,” said Julie.

“Okay,” said Mindy, “maybe it is used for this purpose but only once a month.”

“Why only once a month?” asked Julie.

“Because tomorrow is the full moon,” said Mindy, “the most powerful night for a witch to access magic.”

“So that is why my body won’t be burning tonight then,” said Julie.

            “Exactly,” said Mindy.

“How many witches are in this coven?” asked Julie, “originally I mean.”

“Well there were originally seven of us,” said Mindy, “but four were turned into genies.”

“Can’t you just take their genie bottles or lamps or whatever and wish them free?” asked Julie.

“Unfortunately, we can’t,” said Mindy, “that is why we need as much regular human energy as possible. So we can cast a spell that will protect us from the ‘geniefying incantation’ and also free them as well.”

“Well,” said Julie, “I am glad to help in any way I can. Where do I start? That other girl said something about being dressed appropriately.”

“Ah yes,” said Mindy, who walks inside a closet and brings out an outfit that is made of rags.

“Uh,” said Julie, “what is that.”

“This is what you will wear on your death bed,” said Mindy.

“Why do I have to wear that?” she asks.

“Because you need appropriate attire for a sacrifice,” said Mindy, “plus when rags burn they leave no evidence they were there.”

“Why would you not want there to be any trace evidence?” asked Julie.

“Well, technically we are going to be murdering you tonight,” said Mindy, “And if the police find out what we have been doing for the last six months, we will go to prison for life or worse be sentence to death.”

“And it is bad enough as it is with warlocks after you but to have the police too,” said Julie, “I actually know what that can be like. You know those boys that were chasing me when I tripped over that root.”

            Mindy nods her head.

“Well they are my cousins and the leaders of the neighborhood gang and they want me to join,” said Mindy, “And they have tried everything to get me to do so but I always refused. And one thing they tried was to frame me. That is how I had an unwanted run-in with the police. So not wanting to deal with them is understandable to me. And why would it be murder if I agreed to do this.”

“Just by the simple fact we are killing you tonight,” said Mindy, “Oh, speaking of which, we need to hurry if we want you dead by 6:00 in the morning.”

“I understand,” said Julie, “is there a room I can go to so I can change? I never was comfortable with changing in the presence of other people.”

“Why don’t you use the walk-in?” asked Mindy, “there is a light right inside the door which you can also close.”

“Thank-you,” said Julie who took the rags and entered the closet, turning on its light and closing the door.

She came out looking like a girl wearing rags.

“How do I look?” she asked.

“Like a girl who is sacrificing her life for something important,” said Mindy.

“I like that,” said Julie, “but how come you couldn’t just magically make this appear on me.”

“Unfortunately,” said Mindy, “the three of us are the least experience in the coven. Funny huh, the ones with the most experience as witches were geniefied before we were.”

“Do you expect it to happen to you eventually?” asked Julie.

“Actually, yeah,” said Mindy, “There may be a warlock out there more powerful than the spell we want to cast and we get turned anyway. But if you asked me, I much rather be bitten by a vampire tomorrow night when the full moon is out than be turned into a genie.”

This revelation shocks Julie, “What happens if you are bitten by a vampire when the full moon is out?”

“Well for one,” said Mindy, “I’ll die. All witches bitten by either vampires or werewolves die. But on the full moon the magic in them doesn’t die with them it goes into the one who bites them. Normally the magic will die with them when bitten on a normal night.”

“I see,” said Julie, “well I’m ready to get this and my life over with.”

“Well there is one thing I need to do first,” said Mindy who raises her hand.

“What are you about to do?” asked Julie.

“Put you in chains,” said Mindy as she rotated her hand clockwise one time and threw the circle of swirly lights that appeared toward Julie.

Chains appeared around her wrists and ankles and connected to each other in the middle.

“Wow,” said Julie, “This feels weird. I feel like a prisoner now.”

“Well from now until you are dead,” said Mindy, “you are a prisoner. There is no escaping this from this point forward. Once you are in chains, your decision to agree to this sacrificial ceremony is final.”

“I understand,” said Julie who was also barefooted.

“Alright,” said Mindy, “Let’s do this.”

They go back through the portal and arrive back at the forest clearing.

“Ah the prisoner is ready I see,” said that first robed girl.

“Took you long enough,” said the second girl.

“Well it’s only 12:30,” said Mindy, “we actually have plenty of time.”

“Not if I want to get in bed by 3 so I can get some sleep before class tomorrow,” said the second girl.”

“Mindy, Mandy,” said the first girl, “Stop the bickering.”

“You fight like sisters,” said Julie.

“We are,” said Mindy, “Mandy is my identical twin and Melissa is our older sister.”

“What about the other four girls?” asked Julie.

“They’re our cousins,” said Melissa, “Pam, Pat, Pearl and Paula are quads.”

            “Quads?” asked Julie.

“Quadruplets,” said Mindy, “Four babies who have the same birthday.”

“And the warlocks after you?” asked Julie.

            No answer.

            “Well?” asked Julie.

“We really don’t know who they are,” said Mindy, “they’re just some random warlocks who have targeted our family for some reason.”

“Hey,” said Melissa, “let’s get this started shall we? Julie will you please approach the altar, sit and lay down.”

Julie approaches the altar and sits on it then lies down and stretches out across the table.
“Who will be doing what to me?” asked Julie.

“I will be drawing the symbol on your chest,” said Mindy.

“And I will be carving it to make your blood flow down your body,” said Melissa.

“And I will strike the final blow to end your life,” said Mandy, “Do you understand?”

“Yes,” said Julie, “I think I do.”

“Very well,” said Melissa, “Mindy you may begin.”
